Keeping an old boiler going might seem like a good idea, but it is likely to be a false economy. Modern boilers offer many advantages in that they are more efficient, more environmentally friendly and cheaper to run. An old boiler is more likely to fail or require costly repairs. Consider replacing anything more than ten years old.

What options do you have?

The main types of boiler are: conventional, combination and condensing.

Conventional boilers heat up a store of water using a hot water cylinder in the airing cupboard and header tank. They provide plenty of water, so are a good choice for families living in houses with lots of radiators and more than one bathroom, but they can be expensive to install and run.

Combination boilers provide instant central heating and hot water, but are best suited to properties with one bathroom. They are economical because they heat only the water you use, and quickly – water comes directly from the pipes, and there is no waiting for the cylinder to heat up. The downside to combination boilers is that if you turn on one tap, you reduce the flow from others – not a good thing especially if you’re having a shower when your spouse pops in the laundry!

Condensing boilers are the energy-efficient option. They convert more than 88% of the fuel they use into heat, as opposed to 72% for standard boilers, and can save you up to 40% on your fuel bills.
